EPF sitting in india?

NRIs who worked in India before moving abroad - your EPF account is still sitting there. Here's what you need to know.
EPF is Employees Provident Fund. While working in India, 12% of your salary went into this account, matched by your employer. It's your retirement savings.
When you become an NRI, your account doesn't disappear. It stays active and earns interest - currently around 8.1% per year, which is decent compared to savings accounts abroad.
The dilemma: Should you withdraw it or leave it?
Withdraw: You can take it out after leaving India, but there's a catch. If you withdraw before 5 years of continuous service, the entire amount gets taxed at 30% plus cess. That's brutal.
Leave it: It keeps earning tax-free interest. After retirement age or genuine need, you can withdraw without penalties.
Most NRIs forget about EPF completely. Then years later realize they have lakhs sitting there, compounding quietly.
Check your balance. Decide strategically. Don't let it sit forgotten.
