CRETE (KRETA) Rethymno - The beautiful DAM in the area of Amari/ Rethymno!

The Dam or lake of Potami is located in the area of Amari 25km south of Rethymno.
It was finished at the years around 2008/2009.
The lake has a capacity of 23 million cubic meters and is expected to become one of the most important wetlands in the southeast Mediterranean. Already, many species of birds and animals have appeared in the area. Visitors of the wider area visit the dam and admire the beautiful scenery.

On July 2014, the dam came to light when two firefighters accidentally saw a crocodile which was about 2m long! It was apparently freed by someone unconscious. Various Services participated in the capture of the lovely reptile, however they didn’t manage to trap it. The crocodile passed away in March 2015, after an hard winter .

Der Damm oder See von Potami befindet sich in der Gegend von Amari, 25 km südlich von Rethymno.
Es wurde in den Jahren um 2008/2009 fertiggestellt.
Der See hat eine Kapazität von 23 Millionen Kubikmetern und wird voraussichtlich zu einem der wichtigsten Feuchtgebiete im südöstlichen Mittelmeerraum. In der Gegend sind bereits viele Vogel- und Tierarten aufgetreten. Besucher der weiteren Umgebung besuchen den Damm und bewundern die wunderschöne Landschaft.
Im Juli 2014 kam der Damm ans Licht, als zwei Feuerwehrleute versehentlich ein Krokodil sahen, das ungefähr 2 m lang war! Es wurde anscheinend von jemandem bewusstlos befreit. Verschiedene Dienste waren an der Gefangennahme des schönen Reptils beteiligt, konnten es jedoch nicht fangen. Das Krokodil starb im März 2015 nach einem harten Winter.
