what comes before a prototype? It’s a mockup… or something

Engineers don’t use 100% fancy expensive parts to make designs. There are several stages just for gathering data in order to form a design and these stages include building a physical apparatus. In my opinion this is where the most effort is made, and surely this is where a mechanical designer has the most flexibility to choose any materials to get the job done.

Should we call it a mockup? something tells me we should choose an intentional word for the things we build while researching and developing, so that open source communication could become more clear.
