How Much Fuel Can You Save By Drafting A Big Rig? | MythBusters

The myth has been circulating among truckers and hypermilers for years — draft close enough behind a big rig and the reduction in aerodynamic drag can meaningfully improve your fuel economy — and Kari, Tory and Grant decided the only responsible thing to do was measure it precisely by attaching fuel monitoring equipment to a car, getting uncomfortably close to the back of a moving semi at various distances, and recording exactly how much fuel the drafting effect saved at each gap, and the results were genuinely startling: nearly 40% better fuel efficiency at the closest tested distance, which would be incredible news if that distance wasn't so terrifyingly small that everyone involved — including the Build Team themselves — was visibly nervous throughout the entire test and spent just as much time warning viewers not to try it as they did confirming the myth, because MythBusters confirmed it and then immediately told you it could get you killed.

From the Diet Coke & Mentos explosion to surviving an underwater car escape — if it can be tested, they'll test it.
