Adam Hochschild, "Lessons From a Dark Time"

Adam Hochschild discusses his book, "Lessons From a Dark Time", at Politics and Prose.

To provide “moral ancestors” for today’s struggle against the resurgence of authoritarianism, Hochschild, a journalist, political organizer, and author of books like Spain in Our Hearts and the classic King Leopold’s Ghost, has selected and updated two dozen of the many articles and essays he’s written over the last twenty-five years. Focusing on social justice, these pieces take us through Africa, Europe, India, and the U.S., chronicling battles against racism, xenophobia, colonialism, and surveillance. The heroes of these vivid reports include Nelson Mandela, whom Hochschild accompanied on a 1994 campaign trip; Rebecca Masika Katsuva, who runs a program to help the girls and women raped during civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo; and Mark Twain, who saw that the Civil War and the end of slavery did not mean the end of racism in the U.S.
