Racial discrimination is a problem that the EU stands firmly against

On the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, this is the message of Alice Kuhnke, the MEP leading Parliament's report on a new anti-discrimination law.

This day commemorates the 1960 Sharpeville massacre, when South African police opened fire on a peaceful protest against apartheid pass laws, killing 69 people.

In the EU, racial discrimination remains a challenge. Recent Data from a 2023 Eurobarometer survey found that over half of the respondents believed racial or ethnic discrimination is widespread in their country.

The European Parliament has taken significant steps to fight racial discrimination, calling on governments to recognise and address it, and emphasising the need for comprehensive strategies. Parliament remains committed to ensuring equality and justice for all who reside within the EU.

On this day, we echo Europe’s motto: united in diversity.
