Meet our cows, Bala, Yamuna and Ganga. They are three years old and belong to the Zebu breed. You may recognise this breed by the hump on the back.

The females started to show symptoms of heat at 2.5 years old. Now they are 3 years old and today Ganga is in heat. Once a cow reaches sexual maturity, she will go into heat every 21 days on average, until she gets pregnant. The heat period lasts less than one day.

There are several symptoms. If there is a bull in the pasture, the bull will frequently try to mount the cow. Most of the time, the cow will not hold the weight of the bull, and move away. Also the cow in heat will try to mount other cows.

Another clear symptom is a mucous discharge. It can happen during the day of the heat symptoms. And also the next day.

There’s behavioural changes, the cow won’t eat very much that day, she’ll become very restless and sometimes she’ll start making loud calls. Another symptom of heat is the swelling of the genital area. But this is not a very precise indicator.

Eventually, at some point during the hours of heat, there will be a period called standing heat. This means, that finally, the cow will be willing to tolerate the weight of the bull without moving. It is the short window of opportunity for the bull to impregnate the cow.

The next day, after the heat, there can still be mucous discharge, but the bull and cows will graze normally without any further interest.

It is important to be careful during these periods because the bulls can become aggressive. And since the cows are constantly moving, one can get injured accidentally. So, at these times extra caution is required.
