Jimbo's taking this video today. Not like there's much to its story nor any museums where any surviving examples could be found for me to record at, and thank goodness there's not because this is an aesthetic atrocity. I would go as far to say it's a contender for the ugliest aircraft in history.
In the late 40s, many aircraft designs were going through growing pains as WWII tech was upgraded to serve into the future, but this Soviet strike plane decided to invest nothing in performance and placed all their cards on heavy weapons and heavier armor. A plane so survivable that while it could neither fly fast or eviscerate any large target, it would certainly prove difficult to shoot down.
While experimental aircraft that grow to production models often become legends, many experiments are forgotten. The fact that Ilyushin eventually made a reconnaissance aircraft called the IL-20 really shows not only how forgotten the Gorbach is, but how shameful it is the history of the manufacturer.
I hope everyone is happy to see Jimbo in his own video and/or Shockwave putting out a video less than 10 minutes long. Hopefully I can find more aircraft to do shorter format videos with to fill the gaps between the times I can visit museum pieces.
