this video shows how to fix rattling noise when starting the engine on Mercedes-Benz M157, M276, M278 engines.
during a cold start the chain of the engine rattles
to fix this install a check valve in the cylinder head
this applies to the engines M157, M276 and M278
for the installation we use the right chain tensioner as an example
after the cylinder head is exposed cover the chain chamber with a suitable cloth
this way no small parts can fall in
now put a check valve in the hole provided
the closed side width the ball goes towards the back the open side with the threats towards the front a spring in the check valve controls the supply of oil to the cylinder head and keeps the oil pressure constant preventing the chain from rattling
with the help of the press-fit tool you can press the check valve into the hole flush
screw it into the cylinder head surface
then turn the pressure screw until the plate is flush with the cylinder head surface
the check valve is thereby pressed into the hole
now you can take off the press tool
make sure that a check valve is flush with the cylinder head surface
if so start with the reassembly
keep in mind with certain engine numbers both chain tensioners must be replaced
with the M157 this applies to the following engine number with the corresponding part numbers "157 9xx 60 009367"
on the M278 you replaced both chain tensioners from this engine number "278 9xx 30 035 186" and with the M276 engine replaced both chain tensioners from the following number "276 9xx 30 129269"
