Blossom End Rot (BER) - What is it? How to Treat it.

Blossom End Rot, or BER for short, is a common problem that can be easily treated. It occurs mostly in tomatoes, peppers, squash and melons, but typically is more prevalent in container gardening and raised beds.
BER is basically the inability for the plant to take in calcium. For most rapidly growing plants as mentioned above, this normally occurs when their is either an inadequate amount of water available to aid in transporting the calcium to the rapidly developing fruits. In some cases, it is also an issue if the soil is lacking in calcium.
As the name implies, the fruits will have a brownish rotting end to them where the flower was and thus limiting fruit quality and size.
In most cases, it can be treated with a regular watering cycle, but in some cases will require the addition to calcium to the soil, or a change in the soil PH - which affects the plants ability to take in nutrients.
In this video I will show some examples of BER and speak to the use of some of the treatments:
1) Water regularly
2) Add a high calcium fertilizer
3) Check soil PH - use Garden Lime as needed
4) Consider a Calcium Nitrate foliar spray
