Starlings nesting in Norway

A Gardenature nest box camera follows a pair of starlings in Norway, from the first inspection in April until all 5 chicks fledge a day in early June 2018.

I make nest boxes for starlings bigger and taller than most, both to keep enemies like magpies and cats away, but also to give the chicks some space so that they keep clean and are able to flap their wings to build strength. They need to be strong when leaving the nest box, as magpies can be a threat at that point.

The nest box is 40 cm tall, 20 cm wide and with a 5 cm entrance hole high up on the front. Please help them with nest boxes, they really need safe places to nest! In the US starlings are a pest thanks to people introducing a few individuals. But here in Europe populations have declined significantly. Starlings are fun to watch, beautiful and entertaining, one of our most beloved garden birds and one of the earliest signs of spring here in Norway.

Providing them with safe places to nest will make a huge difference, so please give it a try! :)
