I just received a message that could lead to my great-grandad's WWI medals.

It is rare to find lost military history in a stranger's attic, but this unexpected lead might actually solve a family mystery. If you enjoy digging into World War One history and tracking down lost heirlooms, this story is for you.

My great-grandfather Percy Fredrick Smith survived Gallipoli and was then sent to one of the most forgotten campaigns of the First World War: Mesopotamia.

Fighting along the Tigris River in modern-day Iraq, British and Indian troops faced extreme heat, disease, starvation and some of the worst conditions of the war. Yet today, few people know their story.

As part of my Tracing Percy project, I'm following the journey of an ordinary London soldier through WW1 and uncovering the battles, hardships and forgotten history that shaped his life.
