how to transcribe interviews

In this video I discuss main approaches to transcribing qualitative interview data. I explain the difference between two main approaches to qualitative data transcription, namely "naturalism" and "denaturalism", and also discuss how philosophical worldviews, such as positivism, have an influence on how to transcribe interviews.

This video is a lesson from my self-study course on how to do interviews, and you can get a lifetime access to it by enrolling here: https://www.udemy.com/course/how-to-do-qualitative-interviews/?referralCode=C6C0F17576EE4DA3D3DD

In the full course, apart from discussing the issue of how to transcribe interviews, I also talk about:

- Types of interviews, advantages of interviews,
- How to develop an interview guide, types of interview questions,
- How to conduct the interview, how to develop rapport, how to start/finish the interview,
- Different approaches to transcribing, who should transcribe, what software to use, which approach to use,
- Analyzing interview data,
- Validity of interview data
- Translating interviews,
- Interviewing children, interviewing elites, interviewing people with brain injury, interviewing survivors of trauma/abuse

Here is some useful literature about transcribing (including the sources I mention in the video):

Bailey, J. (2008). First steps in qualitative data analysis: transcribing. Family Practice Advance Access.
Oliver, D. G., Serovich, J. M., & Mason, T. L. (2005). Constraints and opportunities with interview transcription: Towards reflection in qualitative research. Social Forces, 84(2), 1273–1289.

Davidson (below) mentions the relationship between philosophical worldviews and the way we transcribe and position ourselves in the process. She also discusses additional literature on this topic, so her article may be a good starting point:

Davidson, C. (2009). Transcription: Imperatives for Qualitative Research. International Journal of Qualitative Methods 2009, 8(2), 35-52.
