Planets Flip Book

This is one activity from my "Planets Flip Book" pack on TpT. I created this resource and the rest of the space bundle because I was teaching 5th grade last year at a school with a terrible science textbook. (i.e. Pluto was still a planet!) The resources address all of the Florida science standards about space (Florida Benchmarks SC.5.E.5.1, SC.5.E.5.2, SC.5.E.5.3).
You can find the flip book pack here: http://bit.ly/PlanetsBook
And you can find the entire space bundle here: http://bit.ly/5thSpaceBundle

This resource addresses characteristics of planets. The Planetary Fact File cards are perfect for planet research. This was designed specifically for the Florida Fifth Grade Science Unit "Earth in Space and Time" to address the standards covered on the FCAT 2.0 Science Assessment.

Included:

Planetary Fact File Cards (1/2 page nonfiction text for each planet plus the asteroid belt)
Planetary Facts Table
Photos in a PowerPoint file to easily project
Solar System flip book (blank and fill-in-the-blank option)
Planet Opinion Writing prompt
Planet Superlatives Activity
Fill in the Blank Comprehension Check/Study Guide
Quiz
Answer Keys

Students will practice informational reading skills while diving into the standards. The flip book has a blank option for students to fill in their own facts and research, or you can use the fill-in-the-blank option. There are two enrichment activities included: an opinion prompt about which planet should NASA research and a planet superlatives activity where students use the reading passages on the fact cards to help them determine the planet for each clue. A study guide and a quiz is also included with answer keys. This makes a great addition to your space unit or can be used on its own to address SC.5.E.5.2. (*Note--this resource does not explicitly compare and contrast the inner and outer planets.)

Standards Addressed:
Primary Focus:
SC.5.E.5.2
Recognize the major common characteristics of all planets and compare/contrast the properties of inner and outer planets.

This resource also reviews/previews:
SC.5.E.5.3
Distinguish among the following objects of the Solar System -- Sun, planets, moons, asteroids, comets -- and identify Earth's position in it.

Getting Ready:
-Print 2-3 copies of the planetary fact file cards on card stock
-Copy the flip book for each student (decide if you would like the blank one for students to take their own notes or the fill-in-the-blank version)
-Copy the Planetary Facts Table for each student
-Copy the Planet Opinion Writing prompt (if using, there are 2 per page)
-Copy the Planet Superlative Activity (if using)
-Copy the study guide and quiz for each student

Possible Teaching Timeline:
Day 1-2:
Display the planetary fact file cards around the room, on tables or desks, or on the wall. Have students travel around independently or with partners, and read each card. Then, fill in the information from the chart for each planet.
*There is a lot of reading, so this may take 2 class days depending on how much time you have.

Day 3:
Cut out and assemble flip book. (Be sure to remind students that the space between the orbits and the size of the planets are not to scale.)
Have students record important information about each planet and the asteroid belt.

Day 4:
Planet Superlatives—have students use information from their flip books, charts, and the planetary fact cards to complete.
Planet Opinion Writing (You could also use this as a simple class debate.)
Complete comprehension check/study guide for test tomorrow (or whenever you are ready).

Additional Notes:
All of the photos are in the public domain since they were created by NASA. If you would like to print and copy in black and white, I have included a PowerPoint of the photos so that you could project them.
