Lucca Part 4

The Church of San Michele is in the Piazza San Michele and was built over the ancient Roman forum. It was been the center of town since Roman times.

Guinigi Tower, a 150 ft tower that dates from the 1300s, when wealthy families were building bell towers within the walls as status symbols. It is one of the few remaining towers within the walls. It is known for the tall trees (holm oaks) growing on top of the tower.

The main part of the town is based on an old Roman grid street plan that, combined with tall houses and a lack of consistent signage, means Lucca is easy to get lost in.
