How to Deal with Your FOBO: the Fear of Better Options

How to Deal with Your FOBO: the Fear of Better Options

Just about everybody's heard of the term FOMO or the fear of missing out. What I didn't know is that the same dude who named that Patrick McGinnis, he also coined a phrase called:

FOBO: which is the Fear of Better Options.

If you have FOBO you probably just felt like a little stabbing pain right here. Just hearing the phrase, fear of better options because yeah, you get it. I don't even need to elaborate here, but I will just in case.

FOBO refers to the need to explore all of the possible options that could possibly be out there before making a choice.

And it's a form of perfectionism that a lot of people with Impatient Ambition suffer from.

Since Meredyth and I moved into our shiny new Airstream that you see here and got out onto the road.

We've decided that we're at our best as a team.

When we split our responsibilities based on our strengths and preferences. For example, I do a lot of the driving when we are towing and going on long trips because frankly I enjoy driving a lot more than she does, but she's a much better navigator because she gives clearer directions than I do.

I just say, let's keep going. Y'know, that way-ish. Apparently that's not good.

In our business. I tend to be the big picture thinker with lots of big ideas and have a sense of the direction I wanna go for the next 3, 4, 5 years while Meredyth has a much better command of the details of the day to day.

A great example of this is for the Make It Happen Tour that we're on right now. I selected kind of the general route of where I wanted to go kind of pulled out a map and drew a circle and said, these are the kinds of places I wanna see. And then Meredyth takes that map and says, okay, let me execute on that and find all of the different camp sites that we're going to actually stay at.

So we have a place to sleep at night.

I love playing with all the maps. Meredyth loves doing all of the research. It's a great marriage that way. But sometimes her love of research backfires on her.

You see, when she starts looking up all the potential campgrounds that we could stay in, in a particular place, she tends to fall way, way, way down a rabbit hole.

Instead of simply booking the place that looks pretty convenient and has all of the amenities that we need,

you know, like I would do

Meredyth keeps on looking up other campgrounds, you know, just in case.

Why? Because Meredyth has some serious FOBO.

Now just about, everybody's heard of the term FOMO or the fear of missing out.

Now you might be thinking what's the harm? Isn't it good to explore your options before making a decision? Isn't that what smart and responsible people do?

Again, I'm married to somebody teaming with FOBO, so I can kind of read your mind on this one.

Well, it all depends on the stakes of the decision in front of you. So let me unpack that a little bit.
