Can AI Stop Mass Whale Strandings? | NexSens Case Study

Golden Bay, New Zealand, is a whale trap. Its sweeping coastline creates a natural dead end for pilot whales, making it one of the world's worst mass stranding hotspots.

A new system deployed by marine mammal charity Project Jonah is trying to change that. A solar-powered buoy listens around the clock for pilot whale calls, using AI to classify them in real time. The hope? That if we can identify a pre-stranding call signature, responders could get advance warnings of strandings before they’ve even happened.

We speak to Daren Grover, General Manager of Project Jonah, and Dr. Matt Pine, Director at Cetaware and Honorary Professor at Heriot-Watt University, about why Golden Bay is a stranding hotspot–and how this buoy could change stranding response forever.
