What Happened? The Virginia Tech Tragedy

Some crime stories you hear make you wonder, "what even went wrong?" Trust me, I thought about these things too. School shootings make these thoughts more permanent. Sometimes people tend to allocate the blame to something like guns or the internet. Some advocate for stricter gun laws and others advocate for stricter internet regulations. No one is really sure what the solution is.

The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, located in Blacksburg, Virginia, US, experienced one of the greatest tragedies in its history. On April 16, 2007, a spree shooting took place in two separate locations on the campus, all perpetrated by an undergraduate student of the University. The undergraduate student was Seung-Hui Cho, a US resident from South Korea.

In middle school, he was diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder, selective mutism, and major depressive disorder. After being diagnosed, he began receiving treatment and continued receiving therapy and special education support until his junior year of high school. That therapy probably came undone as he was also bullied throughout high school. During Cho's last two years at Virginia Tech, several instances of his abnormal behaviour, as well as plays and other writings he submitted containing references to violence, caused teachers and classmates to worry about him.
