"Spanish Romance" - Instrumental Cover - Vincenzo Martinelli Spanish Guitar

"Spanish Romance" is track two on my very first album, the self-titled instrumental album Vincenzo Martinelli, and is a song that remains quite popular today!

Written by an anonymous 19th century composer, Spanish Romance is known as the soundtrack for the 1952 French movie “Jeux Interdits” also known as “Forbidden Games”.

I chose to record Spanish Romance, after hearing it for the first time as a student. I found it really appealing to listen to and I thought it would sit really well on the guitar. Years later I got into the studio and made it happen!

The song actually makes me feel really happy! It flows nicely on the guitar and feels great to play. The song ‘live" always receives a good response because it speaks well of Spain, and it associates the listener with what you would expect to hear on a Spanish guitar.

I recorded and performed the song at the studio of John Roy, my friend and producer, here in New South Wales, Australia. We used two very high quality microphones in an open space to recreate the ambiance of the room and capture the sound of the instrument, which we managed to do quite well, I believe.

Many other Latin and Spanish guitarists have performed and recorded this song. It also happens to be a piece of music that has lyrics. Many artists have been recorded singing Spanish Romance including the famous Latino singer Julio Iglesias! It’s a very romantic song, and the lyrics reflect that aspect of the music as well.

The structure of the song is in two separate parts, the first part is in the key of E minor and is quite melancholy, and has a beautiful melody on the high string of the guitar. It moves into an E Major section that has a sweet quality. The song then returns to melancholy in E Minor.

Even though it can be repeated a couple of times it is usually in AB form, which means that it has 2 distinct themes. I did not personally arrange this song any differently from the way it is usually heard traditionally, so the way it is recorded is the way you would perhaps hear it in most scenarios.

The techniques that are used to perform this song, on the right hand we employ the thumb and three fingers in the arpeggio style, which is a widely used technique for classical and Spanish guitar.

The song is well suited for the Latin and Spanish style of guitar as it reflects that authentic sound that one would associate with Spain. The song is something I have had in my repertoire for some time.

I hope that you like my version of Spanish Romance
