On the 15th of May 2021, Steamrail Victoria operated the first mainline tests for the preserved Tait set consisting of 381M, 208T, 341T, 230D, 317M. The trials operated shuttles initially between Newport and Laverton, before later running between Newport and Werribee.

It was the first time in 17 years since the Taits had run under their own power on the mainline.

The trial runs were a result of grant money received in 2019 which were spent on a series of safety enhancements and other works, including:
* Purchase and installation of train radios at both ends of the train
* Automation of the trip (emergency brake) reset mechanism
* Installation of speedos (having never been present in Tait trains)
* Electrical modifications to make the train compatible with the latest infrastructure
* Mechanical overhaul of components
* A repaint

The restoration of the Taits has been a group effort of multiple groups including;
* V/Line – which will be the accredited operator of the heritage services
* Metro Trains Melbourne – which will provide access to the rail network and electrical infrastructure
* The RTBU Victoria – which is developing driver training material and will coordinate crewing
* Downer Group – which has been engaged to test the train
* Steamrail volunteers – who will both coordinate and undertake work.
