India’s first commercial-scale Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam has recently achieved criticality, marking a significant milestone in the country’s nuclear energy programme. This development has reignited discussions around nuclear energy security, advanced technological capabilities, and concerns related to safety, transparency, and accountability. The PFBR is a type of Fast Breeder Reactor that produces more nuclear fuel than it consumes by using fast neutrons for nuclear fission. It utilizes uranium along with plutonium input to breed more plutonium and uses liquid sodium as a coolant instead of water. The reactor is a crucial part of India’s three-stage nuclear programme, especially for advancing the thorium-based third stage.
