Pay Attention Interviews: Donald Hoffman Conscious Realism: How Spacetime is Doomed, What Lies Ahead

In this three-part interview, Polly Young-Eisendrath, Ph.D. converses with scientist Donald Hoffman about the nature of his theory of Conscious Realism (that hypothesizes what lies beyond spacetime) and how it aligns with some ancient Buddhist teachings, as well as contemporary spiritual insights. Their encounter reveals new possibilities for a scientific spirituality that could be evaluated by scientific tools and testing.

PART ONE: The Hard Problem of Consciousness: “The Hard Problem” is the dilemma faced by neuroscientists, philosophers, and consumers of neuroscience: after decades of promising correlations between various neuronal and other brain functions with certain activities of consciousness (e.g. perceptions and voluntary actions), there is not even one promising testable hypothesis about how subjective experience emerges from matter.

PART TWO: Fitness Beats Truth (FBT Theorem)
PART THREE: Non-Dogmatic Scientific Spirituality and Inter-subjectivity

Pay Attention Interviews are in-depth conversations about critical, contemporary topics, questions for which there are many different answers. Polly Young-Eisendrath, Ph.D. talks with spiritual teachers, scientists, medical experts, economists, essayists, and social commentators. In Pay Attention, Polly engages dialogue with people who come from diverse political, social, and knowledge perspectives. Her desire is to open new avenues of investigation that will help all of us improve our ability to integrate what is happening in the world right now.
