How to set up "Motion" video surveillance on a Linux system - Part 1

**Updated notes below**

This is a tutorial (part 1 of 2) describing how to set up some basic functions with "Motion" on a Linux based system. Kudos to the developers for creating such a great application. Don't forget to read the comment (#) tags in the config files!

**At the time of this recording I was using Ubuntu Server 12.04. I successfully upgraded my Ubuntu 12.04.5 server to Ubuntu 14.04.1 (in place upgrade) without issue in regard to Motion, Samba, etc. Recently I switched things up, and I am currently not running Ubuntu Server any longer, but instead a Debian based NAS-specific Linux distribution known as OpenMediaVault. I installed Motion from the repositories on the OMV (Debian) box and copied over the same config files I used before. Motion runs flawlessly there as well.

I've also changed my actual Motion setup. Motion now runs at 2 FPS and only captures the center JPG snapshot. Meanwhile, my cameras do 24/7 recording over Samba, so Motion saves JPGs to /media/storage-drive/motion while the full time recordings save to /media/storage-drive/video. This eats up far, far more disk space, but I quite like having full time recording. Motion does its job giving me a quick glance overview of what took place while the full time feeds are there if I need to reference anything. The best setup for you is the one that works best for your situation. I just wanted to share my recent changes I made to my own setup in case it was of any interest to you folks!
