ABANDONED WAR MACHINES - Abandoned Royal Air Force Base

In 1940, the station was opened as a training airfield. It was later taken over by 5 Group of RAF Bomber Command as a heavy bomber base. After the second world war in 1951, it become the temporary home of 1 Fighter Wing, the first Canadian NATO base in Europe.

Between 1959 to 1963 the base was the home to the PGM-17 Thor intermediate range ballistic missiles.

The base had many uses over the years but finally in 1998, The station was taken over by the British Army before becoming abandoned.
