Why Pain is Inevitable, and Suffering is Optional

Staying stuck is suffering. If we’re ignoring emotions and only focusing on the physical, we’re missing SO much.

This episode with Sue Hitzmann was deep.

We dive into how the nervous system and fascia are deeply connected—and how unprocessed emotions literally shape the way our body feels and functions.

We talk about how fascia responds to stress: it constricts when we’re in survival mode, and relaxes when the nervous system feels safe.

Your physical body isn’t just a structure—it’s a sensory and emotional system, constantly interpreting the world around you.

In a world that feels more chaotic by the day…

👉How do we find peace?
👉What do we need to be asking ourselves and our clients?
👉How do we hold joy—even when pain is present?

Because the truth is: they can coexist.

Grief, while deeply painful, is also a teacher.

It strips us and gives us the courage to live more authentically.

To stop waiting.

To feel the urgency and beauty of being alive.

I’ve been reflecting on my brother.

After he turned 18, he stopped complaining about the limitations of his body from muscular dystrophy (MD).

This was after years of suffering from not accepting the truth about what MD would bring him

He once said to me,

“What if I wasn’t disabled, but I was an asshole? Wouldn’t that be worse?”

He wasn’t wrong.

Sue shares what she learned after the passing of her husband, and how she continues to show up for life and experience joy.

These stories—ours and our clients’—aren’t just experiences.

They’re what build resilience.

So the real question is:

Are we creating space in rehab or movement settings for people to truly heal—without judgment, without pressure to meet a textbook definition of progress?

Because humans aren’t textbooks.
They never were, and they never will be.

True healing isn’t about getting back to “normal.”

It’s learning how to live with ongoing grief, feel joy anyway, and honor the body’s wisdom along the way.
