BGMEA chief Faruque Hassan urges India to reinstate trans-shipment amid tariff, freight tensions

President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association Faruque Hassan, called 2025 a challenging year for the industry due to U.S. tariffs and India’s cancellation of trans-shipment facilities. He warned of rising freight costs and reduced competitiveness, urging the Indian government to reverse the decision and strengthen diplomatic ties.
President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Faruque Hassan, says, "This is a challenging year for garment manufacturers in Bangladesh because President Trump recently imposed tariffs which made the whole economy volatile... Moreover, India cancelling the trans-shipment facilities is also going to have an impact. Our freight costs will go up. Our lead time will increase... it will reduce our competitiveness. I request the Indian government to withdraw this decision because we are your neighbours... India should acknowledge that we had a good relationship with them. Our diplomatic side should work with India and make some resolutions for this challenge."
