India's Rarest Mountain Goat Lives Where You'd Least Expect It

🎯 This mountain goat's back lights up almost white in direct sunlight — and turns invisible grey the moment a cloud passes. The patch is a living, light-dependent rank badge.
🐐 Nilgiritragus hylocrius, the Nilgiri Tahr — India's own endemic "mountain monarch," found nowhere on Earth except the shola-grassland hills of the southern Western Ghats. Mature males (6–8 years) develop a silver-grey "saddle" patch across the back — visible across an entire valley in sunlight, completely vanishing in shadow. It's the state animal of Tamil Nadu, locally called "Varayadu" — cliff goat.
⚠️ The species' population collapsed from an estimated 100,000 in 1900 to under 1,000 by the 1970s, driven by hunting and the conversion of grassland habitat to tea, eucalyptus, and exotic wattle plantations. Hydroelectric projects further fragmented the remaining shola-grassland mosaic into isolated patches.
🔴 The April 2025 synchronised census counted 2,668 individuals (Kerala 1,365, Tamil Nadu 1,303) — a 21% rise from the previous year.
