The One and Only Official Air War Between America and Russia
Victorious Soviet soldiers from the most recent campaign against the retreating Germans were marching through the landscape of Nis in Yugoslavia when they heard the unexpected roars of aircraft engines approaching towards them.
The Soviets were eager to push forward and get one step closer to Germany, and were also celebrating the anniversary of the October Revolution and the creation of the USSR. Dozens of red flags could be seen waving in victory.
But in the middle of the chants and trumpets, allied American aircraft started firing at them.
The Soviets were perplexed and immediately retaliated with a squadron of Yak 3 fighters to shoot down their supposed allies.
The minor skirmish soon escalated into a full-fledged air fight when both sides called in for reinforcements.
It was the first and only time in the war that the United States Air Force pilots engaged Soviet ground and air units...
