Oranges, Autism and Vilaval. #autism #hindustanivocal #sensorysensitivity

I’m autistic, and this shows in my relationship with the sensory world, which often is different to most people — richer, but also more intense, unpredictable, and uncomfortable.

Here’s something most people wouldn’t think twice about: oranges 🤷‍♀️

Sometimes, I’m scared of oranges and can’t touch and eat them due to their texture. When I’m okay enough to eat them, I still have to keep the peel partially on in order to keep hold of them whilst taking apart the parts slowly - I can’t hold a fully peeled orange. I have to approach it gently, with rules that help my nervous system stay calm.

It’s a bit like Thaat Vilaval (me singing it in the background 😊), the Hindustani Vocal scale built on eight "clean", "natural" notes — so simple, so “normal”. But within that simplicity, there’s still depth, emotion, nuance. Just because something appears basic or familiar (like an orange, or Thaat Vilaval), it doesn’t mean it’s easy to process — especially when you’re navigating the world with sensory sensitivity.

I move through sensory experiences like I’d sing Vilaval: with space, with patience, with deep listening. What feels effortless to others might take more care from me. And that’s okay.

Note: Sensory processing differences commonly occur in those with conditions such as Autism, ADHD, OCD, but they can also occur independently of any condition.

Are there any sensory sensitivities that you have? 🙂
