Jordans Lock Gate Failed To Open After 24 Hours Of Rain 15.10.18

Uploaded as I thought it would be of interest to local residents. Monday morning, after 24 hours of rain and it was still falling lightly. I ventured out for my usual 5km cross country run hoping to see Jordans Mill weir gate open for the first time for many months due to a very dry summer. I knew the level on the River Ivel that runs past Biggleswade in Bedfordshire would have risen and hoped to see the water flowing fast through the lock once again. BUT the brand new automatic weir gates had failed to respond by lifting and the river was just breaching the banks at 8am and water pouring over the top of the weir into the lock below.
The Jordans family and team were out laying bags of compost to try and hold the water back. David Jordan lifted the smaller weir gates at the back of the mill to let the water flow more freely through the mill gardens and hopefully preventing their home from flooding again as it did in January.
Two men from The Environment Agency arrived but couldn't raise the gates using a manual override. Something just wasn't right. Eventually, they found a crucial knob had been set to manual and not automatic after a maintenance visit earlier in the week. Oooops! As soon the knob was returned to auto, the weir lifted and the water released, gushing into the lock as it should. The level dropped from 2.5m to 2.2m (normal) within 5 minutes.
Leaving Jordans, I followed the riverbank back to Biggleswade Mill - it was fascinating seeing so much debris being carried along the river that's been building up along the banks all summer. The weir at Biggleswade Mill was clogged up.
