Is there any financial support available for grandparents who help with childcare?

Chris Briggs from Employers For Childcare's Family Benefits Advice Service outlines that while there is no direct financial support available to grandparents, or other family members, who help with childcare, they may be able to benefit by claiming National Insurance credits – known as “specified adult childcare credits” – towards their state pension, to cover any gaps in contributions. This could be worth up to £260 per year for those who are eligible.

In 2020, the Government changed the rules around these credits because many grandparents weren’t able to care for their grandchildren due to the coronavirus crisis. Now, the care given by grandparents, or other family members under state pension age, can be over the phone or by video.

We know this is a complex issue, so our Family Benefits Advice Service is here to help families work out if they are eligible for "specified adult childcare credits". Call 028 9267 8200 or email hello@employersforchildcare.org for personalised advice.
