Hornbills of India: There are 9 types of Hornbills in India, and the state-wise details are as follows,
Andaman Islands – Narcondam Hornbill
Arunachal Pradesh – Rufous Necked Hornbill
Indian Subcontinent – Great Hornbill, Indian Gray Hornbill, Oriental Pied Hornbill
Central India – Malabar Pied Hornbill
North East India – Brown Hornbill, Rufous Necked Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill
South West India – Malabar Gray Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill

India is home for nine beautiful species of Hornbills.

Brown Hornbill is also known as Austen’s Brown Hornbill. Both sexes have pale bills with small casques and a patch of bare blue-gray skin around the eye .

Great Hornbill is one of the largest members of the hornbill family. They are also known as the concave casqued hornbill, great Indian hornbill or great pied hornbill.

Indian Gray Hornbills are commonly sighted in pairs. They have grey feathers all over with a dull white belly, black or dark grey horn with a casque extending to the point of curvature.

Malabar Gray Hornbill have a large beak but lack the casque. They are found mainly in dense forests and around rubber or coffee plantations of South West India.

Malabar Pied Hornbill also known as lesser pied hornbill, have a huge bill and casque. The plumage is almost entirely black, but for the white on the belly and the sides of the throat. They are found in central and south west India.

Narcondam Hornbills are small hornbills with a black body, a white tail, a bluish eye ring and a strong pale bill with a flat, grooved casque on top. They are endemic to the Narcondam island of the Andamans.

Oriental Pied Hornbill is a small black-and-white hornbill with a whitish-yellow bill and “helmet.” Primarily black, but with a white belly, facial patch, and wing and tail edges.

Rufous Necked Hornbills are large hornbills with broad dark grooves on the upper mandible. Male has rufous head, neck, and underparts; female is all black. Both sexes have a sky-blue patch of facial skin, a red throat pouch, and a black-and-white tail found in Arunachal Pradesh and North East India.

Wreathed Hornbill, are also known as the bar-pouched wreathed hornbill. Both sexes are black with snow-white tails. The male has a yellow face and throat patch, females have a red patch of skin around the eye and a blue throat patch found in North East India.
