It takes a village (and sometimes a lion) | Joseph Koyie | TEDxColumbiaSIPA

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In one moment your life can change. What was a near brush with death turned into the most important moment of Joseph's life. It not only changed his life. It changed his family's, his community's and quite possibly the entire future of the Maasai people and others in similar remote areas.
Growing up as a Maasai in Kenya, Joseph Koyie was almost killed by a lion. This proved to be a pivotal moment in his life. He was the first of his generation to get educated and get a job. Joseph went on to be named the best guide in all of Kenya in 2012 for his work with Sanctuary Olonana in the Masai Mara. His initial desire to send his own kids to school evolved into another life changing role as Country Director of Under the Acacia, master-mining a game-changing sustainable community development model in Loita that now serves 150,000 of his tribe.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
