What Can Builders Do to Create Healthier Homes?

Sara Gutterman, CEO of Green Builder Media, hosted a discussion with Sam Rashkin and Ken Nelson on what every builder needs to know about healthy homes. Rashkin is the founder of the Housing 2.0 program and author of the book Housing 2.0: A Disruption Survival Guide. Nelson is the group sales manager of ventilation at Panasonic Life Solutions Company.

To set the stage for the conversation, Gutterman points out that “wildfires, extreme heat and COVID has made healthy homes, indoor air quality and ventilation a new imperative.” As a result, homeowners are increasingly demanding simple and efficient solutions to keep their families safe.

“You don't want to spend your day wondering whether your ventilation system is managing the moisture, VOCs, or particulates within the house. It should be a given that that's there for you,” Nelson elaborates. He also points out that several energy-efficient ventilation solutions are available today, like Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs). Gone are the days of sacrificing the cost of energy for proper ventilation.

In this interview, the three discuss how builders can leverage indoor air quality to create healthier homes and differentiate their offerings, like looking for Indoor airPLUS certifications and selecting products from manufacturers with a reputation for facilitating healthy indoor spaces.
