Hello everybody, today we are talking about homeless people. A topic you may or may not have heard a lot about in the past depending on where you live. For example Los Angeles and Las Vegas have many homeless people living in the streets while in Austria they are a lot more rare. But either way homelessness is an omnipresent social challenge in capitalist societies.
About 3 years ago I was still in school, Kolleg to be specific. And our English teacher made us roleplay. This is a normal way to give people practical English-speaking skills, just talking about a topic. In this case we were conversing as a homeless person and the other person was themselves. The idea was to make us understand the challenging situations homeless people face.
Unfortunately, in the end, it ended with everyone in the class not understanding homelessness and some were outright hostile to the unhoused. Why don’t they go to a shelter? Why don’t they get a job? Why not bootstraps? Why don’t they X, Y and Z?
I think ultimately the issue was that my privileged classmates and I were never anywhere near a situation like that. We could not relate to it at all. We were never at risk of homelessness, we had family and friends we could stay with.
I think this is an issue around the world, many people don’t understand homelessness because it is so far removed from the reality we experience day to day. So in this video I will talk about homelessness, what it looks and feels like, how people end up in it and ultimately what we can and must do to eradicate homelessness.
Spoiler: It’s not putting up spikes to stop them from sleeping. It’s more like adopting a more social approach to domestic issues and having community or government control of places to live and work. In short, socialism, the solution to a problem generated by capitalism is socialism, as always.
Before we start, I would like to thank my generous patrons as well as everyone who likes subscribes shares or comments on my videos. This support means a lot because I am still in a hospital so making videos is an additional stress, you are the ones who keep me motivated. Thank you. That being said, let’s have a look at what life is like for the homeless.
First of all, the term homeless is pretty stigmatised meaning people consider it a negative thing. This is because of a multitude of factors but from now on I will call them unsheltered persons.
Unsheltered persons face many issues, the very first one to think of is the fact that they typically don’t have a roof over their head, so if it is very cold life becomes very uncomfortable. Because of that many unhoused people get up very early to try to get to public facilities and warm places before the rest of the city wakes up.
Why do they need to do that? Because in many places people who look like they are unhoused aren’t allowed in public places like toilets. Toilets are double important because they present an opportunity to wash yourself. The stereotype is that unhoused people are smelly and unhygienic but according to an interview of an Austrian unhoused person there are about 8 times more unhoused people than you would notice. Because most of them take care of themselves and look like anyone.
Many also think unsheltered people are lazy and don’t work. This is oversimplified at best. In the United States 25% of unsheltered persons have a job. And many others, though it is hard to know how many, are searching for jobs, this is offline and of course online. Yes some unhoused people have phones, which makes sense.
