How Music Became More Relatable | The Rise Of Bedroom Pop
I often find myself gravitating towards songs that fall under a vague and misunderstood label, Bedroom Pop (Clairo, still woozy, gus dapperton, mac demarco, rex orange county, steve lacy). My love for this genre is shared with thousands of others, and I think I know why. It’s not everyday you discover an independent artist that has their own established authentic style. Completed with a sound so psychedelic and catchy. Because of the internet music has achieved a new level of accessibility. Prior to the internet it was much harder to access older more obscure music and even more difficult to make a name for yourself. But now virtually any song or genre is available at the push of a button. The youth of today experience an unprecedented level of diversity in music and as a result we have so many up and coming artists with wild and refreshingly original musical motifs and production styles which often harken back to and completely blend genres from the past. Heightened musical accessibility has created so many fresh independent artists that really push the envelope and propel their respective genres forward while at the same time paying homage to their predecessors.
Bedroom Pop is the off kilter result of the accessibility that has been granted to our generation, a tangible by product and poignant example of how drastically the internet has affected music in general. But what is Bedroom Pop, and will it even last? Independent music has been a rare phenomenon until recently. Outside of the mainstream genres of Rock, Pop, R&B, Hiphop, there has been many small obscure subgenres, typically these subgenres will experience a short life. From cowpunk to toytown techno, there are a numerous list of genres that fail to make an impact on music as a whole. Although occasionally a relatively small subgenre has the ability to influence new musical trends. From the ethereal otherworldly reverb with punchy offbeat synth leads in shoegaze and dream pop to the nostalgically inviting fuzziness and constant laid back tempo in lofi, to the abundance of reverb that creates psychedelic and offbeat atmospheric soundscapes. Bedroom pop definitely has common and uniting traits just like every other genre but because of its inherently grassroots nature the genre has an unmistakably diverse cast of characters, each injecting their own flair creating an extremely versatile sonic environment.
