Puri Recipe – A Traditional Indian Fried Bread
Puri is a popular and delicious deep-fried bread that’s made from simple ingredients. It's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect for serving with curries, chutneys, or even as a snack on its own. Originating from the Indian subcontinent, puris are often enjoyed during festivals, special occasions, and as part of a traditional breakfast or lunch.
Ingredients:
2 cups of whole wheat flour (atta)
1 tablespoon of semolina (optional, for crispiness)
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 tablespoon of oil or ghee (clarified butter)
Water (as needed to form dough)
Ghee or oil for deep frying
Instructions:
Prepare the dough:
In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of whole wheat flour, semolina (optional), and salt.
Add 1 tablespoon of oil or ghee to the dry ingredients and mix well to incorporate.
Slowly add water, a little at a time, and knead the dough until it becomes firm and smooth. The dough should not be too soft or too stiff. Cover it with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 15-20 minutes.
Roll the puris:
After resting, divide the dough into small equal-sized balls, roughly the size of a small lemon.
Roll each ball into a smooth round ball and then flatten it gently using your hands or a rolling pin.
Roll it into a small circle, about 4-5 inches in diameter. Don’t worry if they’re not perfectly round – they’ll still taste delicious!
Heat the oil:
Heat ghee or oil in a deep frying pan or wok over medium heat. To check if the oil is hot enough, drop a small piece of dough into it. If it rises to the surface immediately, the oil is ready.
Fry the puris:
Gently slide one puri into the hot oil. As soon as it hits the oil, press it lightly with a slotted spoon. This will help it puff up.
Fry until the puri turns golden brown and crispy, then remove it from the oil and place it on a paper towel to absorb any excess oil.
Repeat this process for the remaining dough balls.
Serve:
Serve the puris hot with a side of your favorite curry, chutney, or even with a sweet dish like halwa or potato curry for a classic combo!
Tips:
The dough should be firm, not too soft, for perfect puffed-up puris.
You can add a pinch of carom seeds (ajwain) or cumin seeds to the dough for extra flavor.
Puri should be served fresh and hot to enjoy its crispy texture.
