Internet addiction clinics first emerged in China two decades ago. In 2002, four minors burned down an internet café in Beijing after they were denied entry, killing 25 people. Amid this media furor, a self-proclaimed expert named Tao Hongkai captured public attention by claiming he’d developed a method for treating “internet addiction.” Parents began checking children into rehab centers in their thousands. By 2009, there were more than 300 internet addiction clinics operating across China. The internet boot camps have profited because of high demand from parents seeking treatment for their children.
