Are Corns and Calluses a big concern? Well it depends on how these corns and calluses are formed and on which region of the body. Our body recognises that there is frequent use and thus forms calluses as a natural method to protect the skin from tearing, certain professions or athletes may develop calluses on their palms or soles.
Sometimes these corns and calluses are also formed on our feet even without obvious overuse. These could be the result of a malaligned body or walking posture, which we term as the biomechanics of walking.
Patients may try to reduce their callus and corns themselves at home using foot masks, chemical peels, salacylic acid, shaving or cutting the skin. Many acid-based products work by burning and damaging the corn, causing damage to the surrounding skin and leaving scarred tissue in place after prolonged use. These self-remedies for callus and corns can often worsen the skin condition and lead to burns, wounds and secondary skin irritation or dermatitis.
There are several stages of corn and callus development. Typically, a callus or corn is formed when your body thickens the skin in a particular area to protect from repeated friction or pressure. It starts with dry skin and slowly turns into a callus, and eventually becomes a corn.
Treating corns and callus must also include the treatment of the underlying cause, as it is likely to develop again if not addressed. More often, causes are due to high pressure on an underlying bone or where the foot experiences excessive friction. Paring down the skin, offloading the high pressure area and following a proper self-treat regime at home can also prevent corns from recurring.
