What You Need to Know About Forms W 8 & W 9

Forms W-8 and W-9 play an important role in the U.S. tax system. Traditionally these forms were used by payors of U.S. source income to properly determine the recipients tax status; i.e. U.S. person, foreign person, foreign entity, etc...

Over the past couple of years, however, these forms have become even more important due to the implementation of FATCA. Foreign financial institutions, such as banks, are now also using these forms to determine whether or not a person or entity is a U.S. person. This determination allows the financial institution to determine if FATCA reporting is required on the account.

In this webinar we take a look at the various types of W-8 forms, as well as form W-9. We also discuss when it appropriate to use which form.

We examine the relatively new and complex form W-8BEN-E that applies to foreign entities. This form has caused a lot of confusion for foreign entities because they must determine their FATCA status, which isn't always clear.
