HOW TO GET VIEWS AND PEOPLE TO SEE YOUR VIDEOS:

The metrics you need to optimize for in your content: Average view duration (AVD) how long your average viewer watches, Click Through Rate (CTR) - How many people click on your video when recommended it. This is dependant on the thumbnail and title and is the most important metric on YouTube. And Finally content output (the least important of the three), when was the last time a viewer watched one of your videos. Youtube is aware viewer patterns change over time so the sooner they’ve watched a video of urs, the more likely your newest video will match their viewing profile. Put it this way if you get a video with a 10%+ ctr and over 6-minute AVD - which sustains that number. You will get a viral video. But its obviously easier said than done.

Two types of videos: Ones that target search SEO and CTR matter the most - these videos are more stable and are unlikely to randomly explode and go viral. Ones that target browse and suggested (these are the VIRAL videos): AVD and CTR are the most important and SEO basically doesn’t matter at all - these videos also tend to explode randomly 6 months after publishing.
When starting a channel I would recommend targeting search - this is because when you are small you haven’t got an audience interested in your niche/ topic yet. So YouTube will recommend your browse and suggested targeted videos to people who don’t have an interest in your topic - therefore your videos won’t achieve a good CTR and AVD at first - meaning they won’t get recommended - if this does happen though don’t worry over time youtube will slowly find your target audience with that video and after 3-12 months it will randomly explode.

Length: typically videos from 10-20 minutes do best. This is because on YouTube your looking at getting an average view duration from 6-12 minutes, ( for the reference % watched doesn’t matter). But do consider the longer the video: the more people will click off or just not click in the first place so don’t assume creating 1 hour long videos is the way to go. A great tool to use for improving your average view duration is relative audience retention (show example).

Here are some extra tips for improving AVD (on this channel I average 6-8 minutes) - in the first 20 seconds the video should begin. Explain the video as soon as they click and add a hook. Try not to have an intro unless it's under 5 seconds and you feel the branding element is worth the slight decrease in AVD)

Improving CTR: General rule is the more simple the thumbnail and title are the better - This is unless your video is created to target a search term in which case its worth extending your title to add more keywords (this is usually suitable on How To videos - like this one). I would recommend planning or even making the thumbnail before the video. Some more advanced thumbnail tips. Try to keep the focus of the thumbnail in the middle - if not then include the most important things on the left as viewers scan from left to right, try to keep close-ups of faces in thumbnails unless the background is the focus of the video, try to set up contacting colors such as green and yellow or red and blue - they work well together to create something eye-catching. Title tips: Try to include a range of upper and lower case words unless the video is tilted to look professional. For videos that target browse or suggested traffic - keep titles as short as humanly possible for example I tried to survive one week straight in a rain forest and it was so scary. Better - Surviving 1 Week Straight in A Rainforest - Challenge.
