10 Curious Time Facts

10 Curious Time Facts

1. Language profoundly affects the way a person perceives time. For example, English speakers describe time as being either in front or behind them and as moving from left to right, much like their sentence structure. In Hebrew, the past is in front and the future behind; similarly, Hebrew sentence structure goes from right to left.

2. Without time, consciousness might not exist. A person's identity, memories, and thoughts depend on a sense of time moving forward.

3. Known as the "oddball effect," time seems shorter for people who live a life of repetition and routine, while mindfulness and seeking out new experiences help time feel longer and richer.

4. A zeptosecond is the shortest amount of time ever measured in a lab. Planck time is the theoretical shortest amount of time. A zeptosecond is a trillionth of a billionth of a second. A Planck time is 5.39 X 10-44 seconds. If a zeptosecond were the size of the universe, a Planck time would be an atom.

5. The word "time" is related to the root "da-,” which means "to divide." So time comes from the idea of "dividing" up existence. It is related to the word “tide.”

6. The term “o’clock” is a contraction of “of the clock" and is from 15th-century references to medieval mechanical clocks. At the time, sundials were also used to track time, so to make it clear they were referencing a clock, people would use phrasing like, “It is six of the clock."

7. The snooze button was invented in 1956. However, the size and shape of alarm clocks at the time only allowed the snooze option to go for 9 minutes, not 10.

8. The oldest object on Earth is the Jack Hills Zircon crystal, at 4.4 billion years old. By comparison, Earth is 4.543 billion years old.

9. It takes the brain about 80 milliseconds to process an event after it happens, which means the present is an illusion.

10. Small animals, like birds, perceive time as moving faster than humans do. This means that they perceive the world in what we consider slow motion.
