Matt Mitchley is a prehistoric plant enthusiast and landscape gardener in Cairns, Queensland.

Matt’s fascination with dinosaurs and all things prehistoric has led to a Jurassic themed home garden, where the main thing plants have in common is their enormous size.

Along with the plants, Matt’s animal collection includes Australia’s most protected fish species, the Queensland Lungfish that are “good examples of the animals that lived back in the prehistoric time 150 million years ago.” Plus, there’s a colony of Magnificent Tree Frogs, a python, bearded dragons and blue-tongue lizards, and Matt aims to replicate their natural habitat as much as possible.

Edible Pandan is planted around the pond to help filter the water. A prolific, aquatic species, they remove nitrates from the water which improves quality and provides food for the fish.

After putting a call out to anyone wanting big plants removed from around town, Matt soon ran out space for planting them in his own garden. So, he leased an empty block of bare sand nearby and after much excavation and soil conditioning, created an epic Jurassic theme garden. In the ideal tropical climate of Cairns, many species are thriving and have grown to great heights in just a few years, including Hildebrandt’s Moringa and the Madagascar Palm.

Matt has found a bigger, permanent location nearby for his home, gardens and nursery, and dreams of one day creating a huge Jurassic theme park!
