Four tricks to master the pen tool

✒️ If you’re struggling with the pen tool in Photoshop or Illustrator, then here are a four quick tricks to help get your head around how it works.

1️⃣ Hold shift to draw straight or 45 degree lines between points. This also applies to the angles of your direction handles. When you’re finished drawing, press ESC.

2️⃣ Click and drag to start your direction handles, but as you’re dragging press ALT or Option on your keyboard to create a sharp corner. You can also do this after you’ve completed your shape, by Option clicking on a path point. Or on a direction handle.

3️⃣ If you’re struggling to work out where your path points should go, draw a horizontal and vertical guide at the edges of your shape. Then Shift click and drag on those outside edges and line your curves up.

4️⃣ Start just by drawing straight lines. Then holding ALT or Option on your keyboard, hover over your line and you can just drag your lines into a curve!
