Sakuna of Rice and Ruin Review - 2020's Hidden Gem? (PS4/SWITCH/PC)

Review copy provided by publisher. Sakuna of Rice and Ruin is a mixture of a 2D-sidescroller RPG and a rice farming simulator. At the first glance this might not seem like a good idea, but it's really interesting how both these elements work well together. I'd go as far as to say that this game will be 2020's hidden gem, but I'm also curious to what you guys think!

The gameplay shown was recorded on a PS4 PRO and I've played the game for 40 hours before doing this review.

I'll be covering more Sakuna: of Rice and Ruin over the coming days so if you want to see more make sure to subscribe!

Game Description:
=================
Spoiled harvest goddess Sakuna finds herself banished from her opulent celestial home to an island overrun with demons. In the untamed wilderness, she must rediscover her birthright as the daughter of a warrior god and harvest goddess by weathering the elements, fighting monsters, and cultivating rice, the source of her power. By her side in this forbidding place is her guardian Tama and a group of outcast humans. Together, these unlikely companions must join hands to tame both the soil and the demons of Hinoe Island.

Developed by Edelweiss, the indie team behind the acclaimed Astebreed, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin combines side-scrolling action with deep crafting and farming simulation in a powerful tale about finding one's place in the world.

Long ago, the spoiled Princess Sakuna enjoyed a life of leisure in the Mihashira Capital among the gods and spirits of Yanato. But on the floating bridge of heaven separating the immortal Lofty Realm from the Lowly Realm of mortals, a chance encounter with the children of men (or, as they call themselves, the humans) led to a series of mishaps.

Alas, this culminated in their banishment to Hinoe Island, the so-called Isle of Demons. The ruling deity, Lady Kamuhitsuki, charged Sakuna with securing a foothold for the capital and rooting out the hordes of demonic beasts that plague the island. And, of course, as a goddess she must also look after the wayward children of men who were alongside her. But even a goddess needs to eat, and so the tale of rice and ruin begins...

Hinoe Island, also known as the Isle of Demons, is a mysterious place near the border between the heavens and earth. Although it was once home to Sakuna's celestial parents, it has long since been abandoned to an endless wave of monsters. Deep forests, rushing rivers, and a towering volcano are but a few of the lush environments that Sakuna will uncover with the help of her divine raiment, a celestial heirloom that allows her to scale walls and ascend cliffs with ease.
