This patient is a retired doctor who comes in every two months for thinning out of his nails. His nails have been thick like this for more than 20 years and he had a lot of pain with walking before we started working together. Now he has no pain and is quite happy. He has no interest in removing his toenails.

Toenails can become thick for various reasons. They can thicken with age, from injury, due to poor circulation, or genetics. The most common reason that nails thicken is due to a fungal infection of the nail material, also called onychomycosis. It can affect one or several nails. It can be treated if caught early.
