Natural Flood Management on the River Twyver
Changes in rural land use, urban development, alterations to the water courses, and changing weather patterns have all affected the way the rivers respond to rainfall and the risk of flooding to riverside communities. The Twyver Natural Flood Management project worked with landowners and farmers to slow the speed with which water flows into the Twyver and reduce risk of flooding in Gloucester. NFM measures included tree planting to help slow over land flows, installing woody structures to reduce the speed of flows in the rivers and fencing to exclude livestock. One key aspect of the project was to improve riparian habitat for biodiversity. This project was a partnership between Gloucester City, Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, and the Environment Agency.
