How Do Headmaster Portraits Work If The Person is DEAD

Has anyone ever wondered what the deal is with wizarding portraits, in particular those that hang in the headmasters office. They seem so lifelike, they can hold conversations, express emotion and even sleep. Yet we’re led to believe that these aren’t in fact real people, which of course they aren’t because the people they represent are dean, they’re just paint and memories according to Albus Dumbledore, one of the few decent lines to come out of the cursed child. So how does it work? How can a portrait of someone whose dead, be able to hold a conversation with a real living person and give them advice on things.
