We are back from the first cruise in the U.S. with Celebrity Cruises. Celebrity Edge made history when it became the first cruise ship to sail from the U.S. in over a year. Now, even though we had sailed on Adventure of the Seas two weeks prior, we were a bit shocked (in a good way) regarding the health and safety protocols onboard the ship. So, in this video, we explain the 8 things that surprised us the most about this first cruise after the pandemic in the U.S.

-----CRUISE RESTART IN THE U.S. ------
Celebrity Edge initiated the first cruise since COVID in the U.S. with no official social distancing measures. With 99% of guests onboard vaccinated, there were no physical distancing signage or markers anywhere on the cruise ship.

This meant that the venues on Celebrity Edge were exactly the same. This was very unexpected because on the first cruise back on Adventure of the Seas that ship did make changes to block seats or restrict tables in public venues. None of this occurred on the first cruise after the pandemic on Celebrity Cruises.

Celebrity Edge was able to offer all of its typical cruise activities. So, during the day, there were lectures by two resident experts, trivia, competitions, dance classes, and live music throughout the ship. During the cruise, there were also several parties, including two silent discos and a White Party. Plus, each night in the main theater, there was a different show. An early and late showtime was available to cruisers with no reservations required.

This is quite different from what we experienced on the first cruise back on Royal Caribbean. On that ship, there were few activities during the day. The cruise line hosted no parties or activities that usually draw crowds throughout the voyage. In addition, guests needed reservations for all of the shows. The cruise line did offer several different showtimes for each act to ensure cruisers had the opportunity to see each performance given the theater capacity was reduced to just 25%.

-----THE FIRST CRUISE BACK ON CELEBRITY EDGE ------
Another thing that surprised us on the first cruise in the U.S. on Celebrity Edge was mask-wearing policies. Adults 16+ were all vaccinated; therefore, they did not have to wear masks. Though, neither did unvaccinated children younger than 16. This is different than the first cruise since COVID on Adventure of the Seas where children were required to do so.

Perhaps the biggest change on this cruise were the shore excursion requirements. Cruisers were not allowed off the ship in Mexico on private tours or independent explorations. Instead, passengers needed to book cruise line shore excursions. In addition, there was no COVID-19 testing for vaccinated cruisers. We did not need to get tested before disembarkation even though we visited foreign ports. Unvaccinated children did get tested at the pier as well as at the end of the cruise.

The one shocking thing about Celebrity Cruises' first cruise back in the U.S. was how normal it felt. This cruise was just like any other cruise before the cruise shutdown. We are happy to report that the first cruise in the U.S. was a huge success, and we can't wait to sail again on our next voyage!
