Perla Barcelona McMasters Celebration of Life Memorial Service

Perla Barcelona McMasters, age 72, passed away on September 27, 2021, after a short illness. She is survived by her daughter, Theresa (Dennis); her granddaughters Malaya & Milana (“M&M”); and her loving sisters: Athena, Eden and Rowena. She was pre-deceased by her husband Joseph and her son Antony. Perla was a beloved mother, yaya, sister, aunt, friend and nurse. She was affectionately known as “Yeyeng”, “Yeng” or “Pearl” to her many loved ones.

She was born on June 5, 1949, in San Esteban, Ilocos Sur (Philippines) the daughter of Dr. Jose Barcelona (a dentist) and Teresa Vergara Barcelona (a teacher). Perla came to the United States on November 19, 1974, to pursue a career in nursing at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. It was there that she met her husband, Joe. She was a dedicated nurse and worked in telemetry. After her husband passed away suddenly in 1989, she moved from North Miami to Davie with her two young children. While still working as a nightshift telemetry nurse at Aventura Hospital, she also became a case manager with utilization review at Mount Sinai. Recently, she was a telephonic nurse, with Humana, providing special care to diabetic patients.

A dedicated mother, she made many sacrifices for her children. Her life had many hardships, but she was resilient and persevered through them with grace and her trademark red lipsticked smile. She was beautiful- as much inside as she was outside. She was generous, fiercely loyal, stubborn and very dedicated to her family and friends. Truly- an irreplaceable soul. Perla’s children and granddaughters were her pride and joy. The legacy of her kind and generous spirit will live on through them.

A memorial service will be held on October 16, 2021, at Forest Lawn South in Davie, Florida. Visitation will begin at 11 AM and the Service at 12 PM with reception to follow.
